Brighter days are ahead for the 1,780 employees of Whirlpool Corporation’s local Cleveland, Tennessee plant after the business received a $100,000 incentive to install 2,340 energy-efficient lighting fixtures this year.

The new lighting fixtures will result in 3.4 million kWh of energy savings annually and cut their carbon emissions by 3,109 tons annually. While the energy efficiency project will be beneficial for Whirlpool Corporation’s bottom line and environmental impact, research shows it’s also likely to improve the working environment for employees as LED lighting reduces eye strain and discomfort, improves mental and emotional well-being, and increases safety.

“We are proud to collaborate with Cleveland Utilities to award this incentive to Whirlpool Corporation,” said Cindy Herron, vice president, TVA Energy Services & Programs. “Our energy efficiency incentives for commercial and business customers are designed to help them take advantage of innovative technologies that enable them to decrease energy waste, take control of their energy costs and meet their sustainability goals.”

“Cleveland Utilities is committed to investing back in community, and it’s a privilege to join with TVA EnergyRight to provide this incentive to Whirlpool Corporation,” said Tim Henderson, CU President/CEO. “Being able to support our customer with this program to help them save money, operate more efficiently and meet their sustainability goals is paramount and what public power is all about.”

The lighting project was installed by PSG Energy Services, a member of the TVA’s Preferred Partners Network of vetted contractors.

“This rebate check is about much more than saving a few dollars and cents. It’s the culmination of years of work by our Cleveland manufacturing teams, who have put the time and effort into energy efficiency projects through our World Class Manufacturing process,” said Whirlpool Corp. Cleveland Operations Facilities Engineering Manager Jennifer Dodd. “In 2022, we made a significant investment in energy-saving retrofits, including changing 4,611 fluorescent light bulbs to energy saving LED bulbs. Retrofits like these at our plants are an important step towards our global commitment to reach net zero emissions in our plants and operations by 2030.”

Cleveland Utilities and TVA EnergyRight offer incentives to commercial and industrial customers for a range of energy upgrades. Projects may include LED lighting, high-efficiency HVAC systems, electric forklifts, thermal ice storage, ultraviolet germicidal irradiation systems and custom incentives for specially designed energy projects.
