Solar / Renewable Energy

Stocksy_txpeaef45946EU200_OriginalDelivery_116385Are you considering a solar installation?  We are here to help! Part of our commitment to sustainability and the environment is providing support for customers that are interested in utilizing renewable energy sources.

As with any major purchase, take time to educate yourself and do research before signing a contract. The following steps will help you through this process:
Research
      - Get quotes from multiple companies and read the terms of the proposal carefully.

Experience
      - Ask the installer for references and look at customer reviews.

Licenses
      - Make sure the installer has up-to-date business license and insurance.

Expertise
     - Confirm the installer has a Solar PV Installation Professional or Board Certification from the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners, which is the gold standard for the industry.

Additional Resources
The Tennessee Valley Solar Calculator can help you see if solar is right for you.
The PVWatts Calculator can help you estimate the performance of potential installations.

We currently partner with TVA to offer the following renewable energy programs:

Green Switch
Customers who participate in the Green Switch program purchase "blocks" of renewable electricity from resources such as wind, solar and methane gas for as little as $2 a month. Each $2 ensures that 200 kilowatt-hours of clean, renewable energy is added to TVA’s electricity mix so your family can enjoy clean, green energy at a low cost.

Green Flex
Green Flex is a TVA program that allows businesses and industries inside the Valley to buy in. When you buy Green Flex, you are able to make renewable energy claims, which allow you to show your customers and stakeholders that you are a supporter of regional green initiatives. The RECs purchased through the program are delivered to the Valley along with the renewable energy, and the cost of the RECs is added to your regular electricity bill.

Dispersed Power Program
TVA works directly with qualified producers with a qualified facility as determined by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, FERC, click here for more information about this program.

Green Power Providers
Green Power Providers offers technical support and incentives for homes and businesses that generate their own renewable energy. As of December 31, 2019, the program was discontinued to new applicants.

Green Switch

How to plug in

Making the Green Switch is as easy as flipping a light switch. You can buy green power in 200-kilowatt-hour blocks. Each block you sign up to purchase will add $2 to your monthly power bill, and you can buy just one block or as many as you like. The green power you pay for will be added to TVA's electric system as part of the Valley's total power mix.* Why does green power cost more? Because while renewable resources like sunlight may be free, the technology used to capture the energy these resources produce is still more expensive than traditional power generation methods. By choosing to pay a little more for Green Switch. you help advance the technology and increase the amount of electricity generated from cleaner sources. In the spirit of renewability, the dollars from every block of green power you buy go directly back into Green Switch.

Sign up today and make a positive impact on tomorrow. Call us at (423) 478-9341 for details or visit www.tva.com/energy/valley-renewable-energy/green-switch.

The Center for Resource Solutions (CRS), an independent, nonprofit organization, will perform an annual audit of Green Switch to verify that power from green power sources is sufficient to supply the amount of power sold.

How it works

windWind Power
Power out of thin air-it's no magic trick. Properly placed win turbines can generate electric power anywhere the wind blows steady and strong. Wind turbines use the momentum of moving air to quietly turn the large blades, which are attached to the shaft of an efficient electric generator.

sun2Solar Power
Strong enough to fry eggs from 93 million miles away, the sun is an incredible power source of energy. That's why we're collecting solar power with photovoltaic panels and transforming it into usable electricity. When rays of sunshine strike a solar panel. They give some of the electrons inside it more energy, which creates an electric current. At present the amount of energy derived from solar power is small, but we plan to grow Green Power Switch's solar component.   [Learn More]

methane2Methane Gas
There's treasure in your trash. In the start-up stage of Green Power Switch, methane gas from landfills will provide the largest source of its cleaner energy. If released directly into the atmosphere, the methane that landfills emit becomes a potent greenhouse gas, but using the methane gas as fuel to power an electric generator transforms the problem into a renewable energy solution that actually helps reduce air pollution.

How's this for environmental impact?
Buying two blocks of green power per month for a year (equals =)
recycling 480 pounds of aluminum (that's 15,322 cans) or
recycling 1,766 lbs. of newspaper

Make the switch now to a greener, cleaner environment.
