CUA Grid Modernization Update: Electric Meter Replacement Project Underway
What's Happening?
At Cleveland Utilities Authority (CUA), we are committed to providing safe, reliable, and efficient electric service to our community. As part of our ongoing Grid Modernization Project, CUA continues to invest in technologies that strengthen system performance and improve customer service.
Starting in May of 2026, CUA crews will be installing new electric metering equipment at customer locations throughout its electric service territory. These upgrades are supported by CUA’s fiber network, which enables faster and more reliable communication across the electric system. This fiber infrastructure plays a key role in modern grid operations, helping CU detect and respond to issues more quickly and efficiently.
Why This Matters
These improvements are designed to:
- Enhance electric system reliability
- Help isolate outages more quickly
- Reduce restoration times during service interruptions
- Support future grid modernization technologies
What Customers Can Expect
When work is scheduled at your location, trained CU technicians will:
- Remove the existing electric meter
- Install a new electric meter and, where needed, a meter collar within the existing meter base
- Connect a fiber line from the Network Interface Device (NID) to the meter collar, where applicable
In most cases, installation is completed quickly. Customers will experience a brief, temporary interruption in electric service during the process.
After installation, customers may notice a slightly deeper meter profile and a small fiber connection routed neatly from the NID to the meter collar.
Looking Ahead
These upgrades represent an important step forward in building a more resilient and responsive electric system for our community. CU appreciates your patience and support as we continue modernizing our infrastructure to better serve you.
