We have been made aware of yet another telephone scam. CU has received numerous reports of scammers calling local businesses and customers telling them their utility account is past due and threatening to disconnect utility services. They proceed to tell the customer they can avoid disconnection by making a payment over the phone, purchasing a Moneypak card from a certain store, or delivering cash to a specific location. They are calling from an 800 number and when the number is called back it even has an automated system recording very similar to ours. THIS IS A SCAM. Hang up and NEVER give your personal/banking information to someone that calls you.
In some cases, the scammers are calling multiple times creating a sense of urgency.
As a reminder, we will never demand payment over the phone. If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from CU and demanding payment, call us at 423-472-4521 immediately to confirm your account status.
