Cleveland Utilities Helps Cleveland State Community College Save on Energy Costs

Cleveland State Check Presentation

CLEVELAND, TN (September 30, 2021) – Cleveland State Community College’s new Health and Science Center is among the most energy efficient buildings thanks to help from Cleveland Utilities.

The first new academic building at the college in 40 years, the new Health and Science building will provide additional space and modern amenities for today’s educational needs that the older buildings on campus could not provide.

By using TVA’s EnergyRight for Business New Construction program, Cleveland Utilities was able to help guide the design and installation of energy-saving features in the building, including an energy efficient heating and cooling system, as well as LED lighting. As a result, the facility should operate with 14.5 percent better energy efficiency than without CU’s assistance.

“Given the public health challenges being faced today, nothing is more important than ensuring the education of our future health care workforce,” said Tim Henderson, CEO/President Cleveland Utilities. “By helping the College save money each month on utilities, more dollars can be focused on ensuring the best educational experience for students.”

In addition, the school qualified for a special EnergyRight program incentive of $71,085, which helped pay for the energy efficient upgrades as part of the overall $20.3 million construction cost. CU and TVA officials presented Cleveland State Community College with that incentive at a special event on Thursday, September 30.

“The college was excited to learn about the energy efficient equipment that our architects Barber McMurry proposed for the building,” said Alisha Fox, Vice President of Finance and Chief Operating Officer Cleveland State Community College. “We were thrilled to be able to construct a building with multiple energy efficient features to go along with our state-of-the art teaching equipment in this new building. The fact that we were able to partner with Cleveland Utilities and TVA to receive this energy rebate was a surprise bonus. This rebate allows us to put money toward other improvements on our campus to make Cleveland State Community College the best it can be for our community. We look forward to working with them on future projects here at the college!”

The TVA EnergyRight for Business New Construction program is only one of a number of energy efficiency programs offered through Cleveland Utilities. Programs are also available to benefit homes and larger industries, and more information can be found at tva.com/energy/energyright.
